What is an AI agent? A simple explanation with real examples (2026)

An AI agent is a program that receives a goal, decides which steps to take and uses tools to reach it without a person dictating each step. A chatbot answers. An agent acts: it books the appointment, checks the inventory, sends the email.

How it differs from a chatbot

Think of a receptionist. A chatbot is a sign with answers: you ask for the opening hours and it tells you. An agent is the receptionist who also checks the calendar, holds your slot and sends you the confirmation.

How it works inside

Almost every agent repeats the same loop:

  1. Understands the message and the goal ("I want an appointment on Thursday").
  2. Decides which tool it needs (check the calendar).
  3. Calls the tool with the right data (date, time, service).
  4. Reads the result and decides the next step (confirm, offer another slot, ask for missing data).
  5. Stops when the goal is met or it needs a person.

The "brain" is a language model (such as Claude, GPT or Gemini). The "hands" are the functions or tools you give it. Memory keeps what it needs to remember between steps or conversations.

Where agents fail

The number one problem is not that the agent "doesn't know", but that it fails unpredictably. The most common failures:

That is why an agent that "looks fine" in a demo can fail with real customers. The only way to know is to measure it with cases the agent has never seen.

How to know if your agent works well

At AUN we measure how an agent calls its tools on a hidden test, return a fix that keeps tool names and parameters unchanged, and measure again. You are only charged if the report exists.

Frequently asked questions

Is an AI agent the same as ChatGPT?

No. ChatGPT is an assistant that can behave like an agent when it uses tools. An agent is any system that uses a model to decide and act with tools.

Do I need to code to have an agent?

No. You can use no-code platforms or hire an agent that already exists. See How to build an AI agent and How to hire an AI agent.

Can an agent work on its own?

It can, but you should limit what it may do without approval. See How much freedom does an AI agent have.

What is a function in an agent?

A specific action the agent can run, such as check_calendar. See Functions in AI agents.
